I'm just so tired....

  • of all the uncertainty about work
  • of being charming at interviews when after about 15 minutes it's obvious that this / that situation is just not going to work
  • of trying to be patient and wait for whatever outcome will eventually work out
  • of having to deal with individuals that don't just not respect me, but loathe my very existence (yes, it's true - I'm not making this up....)
  • of Tabitha trying to push my buttons for six straight hours today. How is it that kids sense when you're having a hard day? And why is it that they think that's a great time to try to tax the system even more?
  • of only getting 5-6 hours of sleep for about the 12th day in a row (worked the weekend & I'm the one getting up at 6:15-6:25 am every morning to get Tabitha moving.)
  • physically. I'm thinking that two consecutive nights of water aerobics were probably too much. Such a tremendous amount of fun though.

Safe to say that interviews today were not quite what I'd hoped for. The first one, yeah.... I'm just not even sure where to start with the potential problems. Maybe with the fact that he wants me to invest $150,000 so that I'll be a "committed partner". Seriously if I had $150,000, don't you think I'd just be opening my own practice?? It got worse from there, but I'm going to stop before I make myself sick.

Second interview was good but short. I really, really liked the main doc. Didn't get to meet the second doc. Great office & staff. It's just that the second partner isn't quite sure that they're ready to expand to a third person. So I don't have any real feeling for whether or not there is actually a job potential there. I'm supposed to hear more in about 2-3 weeks, which feels like a really long time from now.

Came across this quote tonight which aptly sums up where I'm at right now: "The best bridge between despair & hope is a good night's sleep." ~E. Joseph Cossman

So I think that's a sign that it's time for a therapeutic shot of Jeger followed by bed.

Can't go without a recent Princess Picture! (She really hates her freckles BTW!)

More Photos and a Public Service Announcement....

So continuing on with more family going's-on during Doug's visit....

Tabitha discovered the joys of Fruit-Loops from Drew & Chase, and one morning Aunt Lisa was up and braided her hair. Huge hit! But didn't last the entire day at school.

Tabitha also fell in love with Kona. He apparently reminded her of a dog she'd known in Russia and while he was here, she was in love with him. A daily ritual got started that every morning she & I would walk to school with Doug and the dogs. Doug had Mia since she is huge and hard to manage, and Tabitha got to walk Kona every day. She was quite embarrassed that he felt the need to urinate on every vertical surface between the front doors of home & school, but she was thrilled to walk him all by herself. Most mornings my view was this....

A favorite picture of Doug & I, taken by Little Miss Shutterbug....

Mother's day we visited with Michael's 80 year old grandmother, Dorothy. She was thrilled to meet Tabitha and Tabitha warmed up to the idea of meeting *more* family. Interestingly enough, Russian doesn't have descriptors for great grandparents or distant relatives, so the best I could do was describe Dorothy as the "Big Grandma", which was endlessly amusing to Tabitha since Dorothy is definitely not big by anyone's standard. Tabitha is presenting Dorothy with her Birthday / Mother's Day gift which was a Russian Orthodox crucifix with the Russian gold chain to go with it. We bought Tabitha one like it, and she'll end up growing into the chain. Dorothy had a china doll to give to Tabitha and she was thrilled. The doll is apparently the prettiest object she has ever owned.

My first Mother's Day was a lot like any other day. Doug nudged Michael's memory and so I ended up with a gift certificate to one of my favorite scrapbook stores, and he helped Tabitha to make me a card which was pretty good. Otherwise, I pretty much still ended up doing laundry, cooking, feeding the hordes & then some, and being the mean person who insisted that Tabitha go to bed early on a school night.... I suspect it's going to be that way for a while.
So on to my Public Service Announcement....
I am very proud of myself since today I lived through my first ever mammogram.
I firmly believe that I can not take care of anyone else until I take care of myself, and preventive medicine plays a huge role in that. Last month I turned 36 (really, just the 7th anniversary of my 29th birthday :-)) and as was pointed out to me last week by my doctor, "That means you're more than 35." So I ended up with a baseline screening mammogram for today.
The radiology place I went to has started using a new gadget called the "soft-touch pad". It's a radio-lucent padding to soften "the jaws" and is apparently not reimbursed by insurance and costs a whopping $8. Frankly, I thought it was money well spent. Now even though I'm a doc and should know these things, I have not ever *experienced* a mammogram and just had horror stories from older members in my family to go by. Honestly, I've always been afraid that as a rather flat-chested gal, there wouldn't be enough there to squish. Let me assure you that was not the case, and the radiology tech was nice enough to not laugh hysterically at me when I told her this. The process itself was really NOT THAT BAD. Ok, maybe not my favorite procedure to date, but I've had a lot worse done. And get this, the machine has an auto-release feature so that as soon as the x-ray is taken "the jaws" LET GO. Instantly. So total clamp time was less than 2 minutes. Hey if it saves my life, that was two minutes well spent. If my telling this story encourages someone to go do a procedure that they've been avoiding, hey that was two minutes well spent. So go out there and do some preventive maintenance! (And No, I didn't take a camera in there with me - photo courtesy of Google....)

This is a test. A test of the Blogger Picture System....

In an attempt to see if the photo upload is still working -- I shall attempt to max-out the system.... :-)

Some highlights in May when Doug & family were with us....

Drew & Tabitha lovin' on Nana

But in reality, they can only be so cute for sooo long.... (the middle one is Chase.)

Drew turned 7 years old on May 9th, so we did bowling (kids thought it was fabulous), dinner at the bowling alley, and then dessert on the way home.... Followed by good old fashioned fun with the Elmo Sprinkler.

All-in-all a successful 7 year old birthday. Drew's & Chase's extended family held a party that weekend and Tabitha was introduced to the slip 'n' slide. (My best Summer photo thus far!)

I have now apparently hit the photo-threshold, coincidently at the same time that I'm falling asleep in my chair.... So more tomorrow!

Bedtime with Brie....

Ahhhhh, life is good when you're the princess.... ;-)

Blogger has had some serious issues the past 4 weeks that have prevented me from being able to post photos. Arrrghhh. And needless to say I've gotten some really good ones that I've wanted to share - the above being a case in point. Tonight I just tried to upload a photo as a lark, after trying daily for nearly a month without any success. Lo & Behold! The upload worked tonight. So stay tuned... if the system holds up I'll be posting a bit more & getting caught up blog-wise this week.

A day in the life of....

As an intellectual exercise today, I kept a list of everything I did today. As I completed a task, I wrote it down on the white board in the kitchen and then crossed it off (*very* gratifying!). I just wanted to see *what* I actually do on a regular typical “day-off” from my paying job and usually I can’t remember by the end of the day. So now I have a better appreciation for why I feel so tired at the end of the day....

So to preface, last night I received an e-mail saying that I didn’t need to go into the hospital today because we didn’t have many babies, so I knew last night that I had today off....

So here goes, in no particular order:

Got up, dressed and ready to face the day
Fixed breakfast for Masha, fruity pebbles dry – no milk, which she didn’t eat since she was sulking. (Mean mom, I told her she could *not* wear a tiara to
summer school)
Drop Masha off at school, wait for bus to arrive & depart with said child
Wipe off kitchen counters
Sweep kitchen floor
Empty dishwasher
Fix Molly’s asthma meds in her food
Feed cats breakfast
Clutter control – i.e. returning “lost” objects to their rightful home from the main
living areas
Change sheets on beds
Wiped down the vanities & mirrors in the master bathroom
Cleaned the toilet in the master bathroom
Dust whole house
Vacuum living room
Washed, dried, folded and put away *six* loads of laundry
Emptied travel bags from lake trip on Sunday
Emptied back of Jeep and put water toys away in garage
Fixed squeaky doors in kitchen pantry & bedroom closet
Vacuumed stairs and placed rug under stair litter box
Rounded up the remainder of garbage & took out. (DH already got 3 bags from
the weekend out of garage, then I added two more kitchen bags, one 30-
gallon big bag, 2 empty litter containers & 2 old air filters – total three more
trips to the curb)
Stopped to take a shower – needed it after all the cleaning
Took photos of all birthday cards on the fireplace mantle before taking them
down & sorting them into “keepers” & “not-keepers”
Took photos of Masha’s bathtub toys on the window ledge
Took photos of Tucker being really cute during his nap
Put camera battery on charger & plugged a charged battery into the camera
Ate lunch & read scrapbooking magazine for 20 minutes
Checked e-mail and answered a few
Looked up address & printed map for interview on Wednesday (don’t get too
excited, the doc has already said that there won’t be an opening for 6-9
months.... <very big sigh>....)
Looked up names of pedi’s not yet sent cover letter & my CV
Printed out photos for a Thank you card to good friends MJ & Tarl, wrote out card
and got ready for mail
Printed out photos for late Father’s Day card to my dad, wrote out card & got
ready to mail
Rounded up my brother’s mail that is being delivered here and got ready to mail
to him in San Antonio
Dropped off dry cleaning
Stopped at Post office for postage on above packages
Picked Masha up from school, chased down bus to get her daily folder back that
she left on bus.
Fixed afternoon snacks
Took Masha to gymnastics
Made phone calls to two practices in an attempt to set up interviews –
unsuccessful. One closed at 3:30 and switched over to the answering
service, other one the main doc is on vacation until next week.... <very big
sigh>....
Called my friend Kirsten, so far no chickenpox at her house *yet*
Went home from gymnastics & started cooking dinner
Set table & served dinner, translated a lot during dinner, got to eat some
Washed pots & pans and cleaned up after dinner (Michael put the leftovers away)
Loaded dishwasher
Fix Molly’s asthma meds in her food & feed the cats dinner
Looked at calendar and realized that today is Pixel & Molly’s 10th birthday
Made lunch for tomorrow
Made more ice tea
Replaced batteries in two of my clocks
Ironing
Herded Masha out of bathtub & into pajamas
Prompted her to go pick up her stuff from all over the house (Mean Mom – I keep
what I have to pick up and she has to do extra chores to earn her stuff
back.... It’s taking a while, but she’s learning....)
Got her settled to bed & good nights
Checked e-mail and answered a few more
Visited favorite blogs
Signed into the classroom chat at my current BigPicture Scrapbooking class
Working on my blog as the posts are posted at the chat.
I have my clothes picked out for tomorrow, gear for tomorrow packed up & in the
jeep.
Checked back on Masha to see if she’s closer to being asleep – not a chance.
It’s already 8:45pm – that 6:30 am wake up will just bite in the morning.
So now I’m just chilling in front of the computer & feeling very tired. Funny thing is that on the days that I “Go to work”, I generally do about the same amount of stuff in addition to seeing x number of patients. I feel fairly illuminated just listing out everything, and Michael was a little bit floored looking at the list on the white board – which was only about 2/3 of the real list since I ran out of room there and had to go to regular pen & paper.

Interestingly enough, the only two items that did not make it to today’s list were “Mop the kitchen floor” and “Scrapbooking – start sorting photos” ... Maybe tomorrow. Just got e-mail a bit ago that the baby count is still low so I may not need to go into work tomorrow..... I can hope! ( So if you wonder why you haven’t heard from me in a while, it’s probably because I’m having a day like today. )

Time for an update....

In the job search....

It has in fact, been a rather odd last few days. Memorial Day weekend, a very large & heavy box arrived at our door. It was the CV’s & cover letters generated by the folks at The Doctor Job. Long story cut short, this is a company that does direct marketing of physicians to help them find jobs in “saturated” markets like the DFW metroplex. The cost is based on number of documents generated and they do have a service, for an extra charge, that will electronically sign and collate & mail out your letters. So for the past 10 days in an effort to be frugal, every bit of free time I could muster has been spent signing, folding, collating, stuffing envelopes, stamping & sending out these letters. Over 720 in all were sent out. Little miss had a deliriously wonderful time Monday helping me put stamps on them and then dropping them in the letter slot at the post office. It was a great deal of fun for her to send about 350 letters through the mail slot and then open the door up again to make sure they had each gone through.

They must have started arriving in the past 24 hours because my cell phone has been pretty busy today. Interestingly enough, over 50% of the calls have been from docs calling to say “We’re not hiring, don’t know anyone who is, but wanted you to know we received your letter....” I also got three e-mails today of the same type. As delightful as it is to know that someone is reading these things on the other end, it’s quite frustrating that nothing productive is really occurring. More so when since for the majority of job leads that I do have are for Locum tenems in Amarillo, Lubbock, Wichita Falls, El Paso, etc. Or that the positions so far in DFW request “fluent in Spanish required”.

I’m trying to maintain my faith that there is something out there employment-wise and that it’s just a matter of time before I find it. It’s ironic that I went into medicine for the job security, but that in reality it’s just not all that secure. In this day and age of 3-6 week delays to see a doctor, one would think it would be impossible to be an unemployed physician. And yet, that’s not the case....

Funny how...

Some weeks seem longer than others and some just fly by.

The past month with Doug & family here just flew at the speed of sound! Those rare moments when we were still and able to talk I kept telling myself to “Remember this time; hold on to these moments; cherish this time with Doug,” because I knew it wouldn’t last and that he would move onto the next place. I didn’t always think he was all that great, i.e. when I was nearly 4 years old at the time he was born. And then the years pass and we’ve suddenly grown up. And he’s turned out to be one really cool guy.... Next to Michael, my brother ranks at the top of my very short list of people I consider my best friends. The part I love the best about these people, is that no matter how long it’s been since we’ve talked, we just pick up right where we left off and if feels like the barriers of time & space cease to exist. So this week has dragged because I’ve been missing my bud.
Then there was the Monday holiday. I don’t know about you, but these 3 day weekend holidays just throw me for a loop and I spend the rest of the week discombobulated and trying to catch up.

In contrast to me, the week has flown by for little miss Tabitha. Since school is out this week and ESL Summer School doesn’t start until June 5th, she has spent 4 of 5 days with Michael’s parents. (I’m going to put in a gratuitous plug here – I have the best in-laws in the world! On little-to-no-notice they dropped everything and have driven to our house 3 of 4 days to baby sit. My MIL even did chores in my kitchen today, which I appreciate beyond all belief; especially since today was another not-so-great day on the work front.... Mom & Pop, Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!!!)

Wednesday I had off and got to just enjoy being “Mom” all day. We checked out the school that summer school will be held at. That was a bit freaky because from the outside it looks exactly the same as her regular school, and inside the layout is exactly the same, but the colors are all different and the mascot theme is all different. Definitely Surreal. She’s not too keen on the summer school idea, especially because her friend from school won’t be there and neither will Mrs. T, her first grade teacher. So the entire ride home I got to listen to round after round of “Ni Hachoo!” or the Russian version of “I don’t want to!” The whining quotient has really started to go up around here, which while very annoying, is a good sign that she feels pretty comfortable here with us. Next on our agenda was fetching her friend, Megan, and heading to the movies to see Over the Hedge. I have to tell you that all three of us laughed the whole time. Tabitha particularly liked the bits that she’d previewed the night before of the clips I downloaded. Apparently they get funnier the more often you see them.... She & Megan decided that they liked Hammy the best, and T’s reason why is because he can burp his ABC’s. Which she tried to replicate several times since then. I’m sure that parents across America cringed with me at that plot point.... Megan came home and played with us the rest of the afternoon and then we had to take her home. She then had her first swimming lesson. Michael had booked a private lesson for her and she just had a blast. They even got her to jump into the deep end and dog-paddle back to the pool wall, hop out & repeat. All in all, Tabitha had a great time & a great day which was her reward for good behavior two days in a row (i.e. no full body screaming tantrums – have I mentioned that she’s a bit headstrong??). She kept asking me “So this is what happens when I’m good?” And I kept a straight face and told her very seriously “Yes.”

Thursday was grandparents’ day and involved serious video & play time. For dinner the five of us went to Christina’s for some of the best Mexican this side of the Denton County line. We almost didn’t get there because little miss decided to warm up with some whining that she didn’t want to go, she didn’t want dinner, she was tired.... yadda yadda. We quickly ramped up to screaming protests and then defiant posturing. At that point, which was the icing on the cake of a not very good day for me, I had my own little temper tantrum, told her that I was hungry, that I wanted to go to this restaurant, and that my child did not have the power to make these decisions, and that I was not going to let her determine where I was eating my dinner (mostly in Russian). At which point she got walked to the car, put in the car and we left. Michael had some misgivings, but I told him that basically she needs to be shown that we are in fact, the boss of her. As we had left the house my father-in-law commented to Michael & I, “That’s right, can’t let her have too much power.” Pop, you have no idea how much that meant to me, that you didn’t think I was crazy for trying to take her to a dinner she said she didn’t want. We ended up having a very good time. She whined until the big bowl of chips arrived and then she got down to serious business. She experimented with bites from all of our meals and determined that right now she likes guacamole, Mexican rice, tacos, and definitely sopapillas.

Today was grandparents’ day also. All I really hoped for them to accomplish today was getting to Wal-Mart and buying a couple of swimsuits, since I‘ve figured out that two is not nearly enough to get through this summer. In hindsight, that was probably not a smart “Mom” choice since Grandma went a little bit crazy shopping. So 3 skirts, 2 swimsuits, a t-shirt, 2 more pairs of shoes, a PJ set, a set of headbands, a new princess video and a slip’n’slide later, they came home. It just boggles the mind how a child who arrived in this country with one small suitcase, now owns enough to overflow a closet and overwhelm a bookcase in her room. She’s starting to struggle with keeping everything put away so I can tell that this weekend, some time will go towards some organization. I empathize entirely. My brain doesn’t work well when I’m surrounded by chaos and I always feel a bit more settled when my home is peaceful. A few weeks ago she started blaming the cats for the mess piling up on the floor of the closet and gets very dramatically upset about it. So tonight I told her that if they were causing that much trouble, then she must not want them around anymore and that tomorrow we could send them all outside and they could find new homes. Oh Ho! There was some serious back-peddling after that and she wanted to be very sure that I knew that she still wanted to keep the cats around.... As if I would really do that, but she thought I was serious! And so she got the point and some of her clothes started making their way back to where they belong.

She is overall a tidy child, who requires the regular amount of reminders to pick up her stuff. The first weekend that Doug, et al arrived, I had just finished her laundry and the full laundry basket with her folded clothes went to her room to be put away. I told her once and she ignored the basket for Saturday. Sunday morning I told her again to put her things away, and I was ignored again. So by Sunday afternoon, I told her that I needed my basket back and that since she hadn’t put her clothes away she must not want them, so I was going to keep them for her. They got packed up and put on the top shelf in my closet. It took two weeks before she really started to miss that half of her wardrobe, and when she got them back they were put away right then. Since then, I’ve had to do a few reminders that what Mommy picks up, she keeps. Once is all it takes to get the message through. Right now, I’ve got a swimsuit hostage as we’re learning that one doesn’t leave one’s dirty laundry on the bathroom floor.

So that concludes this evening’s installment of “Tabitha Tales”..... Stay tuned, more to come....
