Time for an update....

In the job search....

It has in fact, been a rather odd last few days. Memorial Day weekend, a very large & heavy box arrived at our door. It was the CV’s & cover letters generated by the folks at The Doctor Job. Long story cut short, this is a company that does direct marketing of physicians to help them find jobs in “saturated” markets like the DFW metroplex. The cost is based on number of documents generated and they do have a service, for an extra charge, that will electronically sign and collate & mail out your letters. So for the past 10 days in an effort to be frugal, every bit of free time I could muster has been spent signing, folding, collating, stuffing envelopes, stamping & sending out these letters. Over 720 in all were sent out. Little miss had a deliriously wonderful time Monday helping me put stamps on them and then dropping them in the letter slot at the post office. It was a great deal of fun for her to send about 350 letters through the mail slot and then open the door up again to make sure they had each gone through.

They must have started arriving in the past 24 hours because my cell phone has been pretty busy today. Interestingly enough, over 50% of the calls have been from docs calling to say “We’re not hiring, don’t know anyone who is, but wanted you to know we received your letter....” I also got three e-mails today of the same type. As delightful as it is to know that someone is reading these things on the other end, it’s quite frustrating that nothing productive is really occurring. More so when since for the majority of job leads that I do have are for Locum tenems in Amarillo, Lubbock, Wichita Falls, El Paso, etc. Or that the positions so far in DFW request “fluent in Spanish required”.

I’m trying to maintain my faith that there is something out there employment-wise and that it’s just a matter of time before I find it. It’s ironic that I went into medicine for the job security, but that in reality it’s just not all that secure. In this day and age of 3-6 week delays to see a doctor, one would think it would be impossible to be an unemployed physician. And yet, that’s not the case....
